Classical Jazz 2005: Home

Welcome

Our purpose is to identify, research, introduce and facilitate the implementation of "best practices" from other systems that would improve student achievement in our public school system.

Our mission is to improve student achievement through targeted program initiatives, with specific goals, results measurement, and timely reports to the community.

Our Areas of Focus

Leadership Development

Working to ensure that our school administrators are the instructional leaders of each building and have the knowledge and skills necessary to be the Lead Learner.

Reading on Wheels a success!

Professional Development for Teachers

Ensuring teachers are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and support to meet the needs of every child. The Alabama Reading Initiative has been particularly effective in providing mentoring from a Reading Coach, offering adequate materials, and giving teachers a variety of methods (small group instruction, whole group instruction, individual practice, etc.) by which they can meet the needs of various learning styles. Four schools (Nixon, Highland Gardens, Morris, and Floyd) expanded their focus to math this past fall by acting as pilot sites for the Mobile Math Initiative (MMI). MMI provides Kindergarten and third-grade teachers at these schools with the knowledge and materials to help students grasp abstract and concrete mathematical concepts.

Public Engagement

Through our Shadowing Program, individuals from throughout our city have an opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of the challenges and successes our schools face daily. Through a half-day school visit and a follow-up conversation with Central Office staff and school policymakers, participants get a greater understanding of our schools and their needs. Through Crucial Conversations, in partnership with Envision 2020, attendees focus on factual information about school performance, funding, staffing, etc.

Parent and Community Support

Our schools and our city are greatly enriched by the support and involvement of Montgomerians. As public schools work to educate all children, MEF believes parents and community members will get involved if given the opportunity to make meaningful contributions. The Foundation’s work has ranged from supporting Partners in Education as they recruit tutors to work one-on-one with students to helping parents understand what families can do to support learning at home to working with area preschools so children enter our K-12 programs better prepared to undertake elementary-level work. Our latest venture, Stuff the Shelves, aims to put 500 books in each of Montgomery’s 33 elementary schools to accommodate the rapidly increasing demands on our libraries by students required to read 20 minutes per night from books at or above their current reading level.
